Description Osmunda regalis Osmunda regalis, commonly known as the Royal Fern, is a magnificent deciduous fern native to the UK and much of the temperate world. This stately plant can reach impressive heights of 1.5-2 metres, with a spread of up to 1.2 metres, making it one of our largest native ferns. The fronds emerge with strong purple tints in spring, turning golden-bronze in autumn before dying back. The distinctive fertile fronds appear rust-coloured at their tips, resembling flower spikes, giving rise to the common name “Flowering Fern”. Culturally, the Royal Fern thrives in moist to wet, acidic soil and prefers partial shade, though it tolerates full sun if kept consistently moist. It’s ideal for bog gardens, pond margins, or damp woodland settings. Hardy to -20°C, it requires minimal maintenance once established. Mulch annually with leaf mould or compost, and divide congested clumps in spring if necessary. This architectural fern provides excellent structural interest throughout the growing season.
